The study of Biology provides students with the opportunities to develop an understanding of our living world. The knowledge of Biology includes Scientific data, concepts, hypothesis, theories, methodology, use of instruments, and conceptual themes. The role of Biology lab becomes a key component in understanding Biology. Lab provides opportunities for teachers to model best practices in the study of Biology, including application of scientific methodologies, respect for life and the environment, inclusion of learners of all abilities, and consistent adhere to safety standards.
Cider has established a well-equipped, well ventilated and spacious Biology lab according to CIE (Cambridge International Examination) practical lab protocols and the guidelines of Bangladesh Board of National curriculum & education in 2007. Both Cambridge and National curriculum biology students do their experimental works in this lab. Different practical class schedules are maintained for two different curriculums.
The Biology lab helps the students to develop a broad array of basic skills and tools of experimental Biology and data analysis. The students use many different types of basic laboratory apparatus to observe and analyse the biological concepts. The lab possesses many modern apparatus that are sufficient enough to conduct the classes and organise the practical exams.
In Biology lab the following facilities are available now:
- 10 big working tables ( 40 students can do experimental works at the same time)
- 2 fixed white board ( one for power point projection and one for writing )
- 20 sinks for experimental works
- An Eye wash and safety sink ( if hazardous chemical are used)
- 40 chairs
- A fire extinguisher mounted to the wall
- Sufficient Electric outlets to minimize the use of extension cords
- A big wall-fitting shelf where chemical & apparatus are stored and segregation are maintained.
- Safety measurements tools & a list of hazardous chemicals that includes chemical name and its action
The lab is also equipped by fourteen 3D anatomical models e.g. Skeleton, Jumbo Heart model, Digestive system, lung model, male and female reproductive system etc. and these are used for educational purposes.
As we know that Biology is the study of life and its evolution of organisms and their structures, functions, processes, and interactions with each other and with their environments. So, scientific inquiry is the primary process by which scientific knowledge is gained. To ensure these demands, Cider biology lab also has 31 museum specimens like Tiger, shirk, Indian king cobra, jellyfish, Scorpion, Eagle ray, Crocodile, Draco, Octopus etc. Hence it is not only the practice room for experimental works but it is also used as museum. The lab is well prepared and ready to organize National board exams. It can also be also used as CIE practical exam center for both O’ & ‘A’ level students.
We believe that a well-established Cider Biology lab will provide our students with the opportunities for questioning, hypothesis formulation, experimental design and data analysis. It will help in making the lessons interesting and thus the students can develop their understanding and knowledge of biological concepts.
