Mathematics learning happens when children participate in activities that they can connect to and are meaningful for them. Such activities form the basis for developing Number Sense and Spatial sense. The early years are foundational not only for learning the fundamental mathematical ideas but also for developing the attitude towards to mathematics. It is during this period that either ‘Math phobia’ or ‘love of mathematics’ gets created.

This was the context in which JodoGyanorganized two days training session at CIDER on 9th and 10th December 2017, with the junior school teachers. JODOGYAN is a not-for-profit, non-funded organization, based in New Delhi, India working in the area of primary school mathematics education since 1998. They have developed few modules for teaching mathematics and also teaching-learning materials as part of bringing quality change in the classrooms.

The two days training sessionswere based on primary school mathematics. There were hands-on sessions for the teacherswhich focused on the concepts and usage of teaching-learning materials in the classroom. The following topics were covered in workshops:-

– Number, Number sense and Place value

– Number Operations

– Geometry – 2 D

– Fractions

– Decimals
– Shape and shape sense

– Use of stories and contexts

– Mental Math related games

Overall it was a very fruitful training session. The teachers have started looking at Math from a different point of view afterwards. Infect is has become absolutely clear to everyone that Math is one of the most interesting subjects and can be taught with lots of innovation and techniques.
