Inter School English Debate Competition 2016

Debate- one of the co-curricular activities that gives students creative room to express what they feel. The length and breadth of knowledge that they gain through debate is simply unparalleled. Debate, an intellectual sport, trains critical thinking, speaking skills and teamwork, whilst raising participants’ awareness of national and international issues.

CIDER International School has set the benchmark for conducting extracurricular activities in such a way that the students not only enjoy but also learn a great deal from it. With this perspective in view, the English Department of CIDER International School organised an Inter School English Debate Competition 2016 for the students of Class IX – XII on November 5, 2016.

The format of the English Debate was a bit different as the day witnessed keen competition wherein 14 participants from Cantonment English School & College, Bangladesh Elementary School, International Turkish Hope School, Little Jewels School, CIDER International School NC, Al Hidaayah International School & CIDER International School Cambridge had to debate on the topic “The tuition culture is destroying the essence of schools in Bangladesh”.

Professor Dr. Syed Md. Golam Faruk, Director, Directorate of Secondary & Higher Education, as the Chief Guest ; Mr. Monjurul Hoque, CEO, N. Mohammad Group as the Guest of Honour; and Ms Hasina Begum Khan, as Special Guest graced the debate competition with their august presence.

The competition was judged by Ms Aniqa Raisa Chowdhury, Associate Professor, Department of English, Chittagong College; Mr. Md. Sadat Zaman Khan, Chairman, Department of English Language & Literature, Premier University and Ms Nahid Khan, Deputy Registrar, Chittagong Independent University who were deeply engrossed in the ideas of the students. It was very evident that the debaters were well prepared and they used various skills like overstatement, definition, irony etc. to convince the audience. The participants, armed with statistics and data made their arguments more emphatic with their righteous facial expressions, body movement and gestures. The debaters of 7 teams spoke enthusiastically on the issue. They cited reasons and supported them with suitable examples from real life, to justify their stand. Speaking on the occasion the judges praised the School Management and Principal for organizing such event.

All the 7 teams exhibited great oratorical skills but finally the school that was declared winner was CIDER International School, Cambridge. FOR the motion category, Ramisa Malyat from CIDER International School, Cambridge was adjudged the best speaker. The second prize went to Md. Mohidul Alam from Cantonment English School & College and Doreen Penherio from Little Jewels School was chosen as the third best.

AGAINST the motion category, Shamsul Rabbani from CIDER International School, NC was adjudged the best speaker. The second prize went to Tamanna Ali from CIDER International School, Cambridge and Fairooz Siddique from Al Hidaayah International School was chosen as the third best. The winners who displayed confidence and poise in presenting their arguments before audience were honoured with bouquets of flowers, gifts, crests and certificates.

The students, guest-teachers and the audience thoroughly enjoyed the event. This, being one of the most eagerly awaited occasions of the school life, leaves a very memorable impact on the mind of every debater. Undoubtedly, it was a dignified and special event for CIDER.
