World has stepped into 21st century. The century of mysteries, change and revolution. One of the drastic changes we can see in 21st century is in its education system. The students of this century are profound, well known and documented. 21st century emphasises in skills and the term skills refer to a broad set of knowledge, work habits and character traits. It has become student centered with real life, relevant, collaborative and project-based learning.

It’s focused on developing critical thinking, problem solving, reasoning, analysis, synthesizing information and behavior of the students. It has become more action oriented and prioritizing in building leadership. Its not textbook driven & fragmented curriculum anymore, its more of research & technology driven and integrated-interdisciplinary curriculum. This curriculum is connected to students’ interests, student diversity, talents and the real world. It is providing the great deal of student freedom and making them active learners as well as establishing a mutual respectful relationship with teachers. As this system has a student centric approach, self, peer and other authentic assessments are ultimate judgment and teacher is facilitator/coach here. 21st century’s education believes in civic, ethical literacy and scientific literacy as well. It is helpful in broadening student’s creativity and imagination and also ensuring the all-round development of mind, body and soul. This education system is promoting oral and communication skills, public speaking skills, and also viewing, presenting and listening skills. So, the 21st century skills concept is motivated by the belief that teaching students the most relevant, useful, in-demand and universally applicable skills should be prioritized in today’s schools. Schools need to adapt and develop new ways of teaching and learning that reflect a changing world. Teachers have to be more strategic, innovative, digital and global. Thus a student can be globally connected, locally engaged and can fulfill the greatest demand of the society and the world.

The past few decades have seen a great progress in education reformation in all over the world, and progress that has especially benefited less-advantaged students. Today’s reformers can build on that progress only if they pay keen attention to the challenges associated with genuinely improving teaching and learning. If we ignore these challenges, the 21st century skills movement risks becoming another fad that ultimately changes little—or even worse, sets back the cause of creating dramatically powerful schools and thus not fulfilling the real motive and intentions of education.
